What I Wish I Knew As A Freshman

I read a countless amount of articles and blog posts on your freshman year before leaving for school in August of last year. All of them say "oh it's going to be the best years of your life!", "you'll meet all of your life long friends here!", "late night pizza parties!". My freshman year was not that. But in all honestly, it was great. I didn't meet a ton of new people, but the ones I did become friends with I probably won't really talk to again as we've moved out of the dorms or aren't in the same classes.

I wish someone would have told me all of these things before I left for college.

Not everyone goes out. I surely did not. I actually stayed in 5-6/7 nights. My roommate? Not so much.

Just do it. Going out with a group of friends you don't really know kind of seems scary, but I wish I was told to just do it.

Go first in presentations. Always. You will spend way less time stressing and wanting to get sick over it. I promise.

Stop ordering delivery. I spent SO MUCH MONEY in delivery last year. I never wanted to leave my dorm at 1AM (obviously) so what's better than a calzone? Having more money in my bank account.

Don't wear heels out. Just don't. You will twist an ankle. So just don't. Enough said.

Always have water. And a phone charger. You will get thirsty ($4 for a water bottle in the student center? No thanks.) Your phone will also die. I promise.

Everyone hates Freshman. That became apparent real quick through the app YikYak. Everyone automatically forgets that they ever were one.

Don't sit in your room every night. Please don't. Go knock on your neighbors door, ask to go take a trip to Taco Bell or if they're watching the Bachelorette. Just go do something.

Your grades are important, but not everything. I stressed so much over my grades and it turns out, I really didn't even need to.

Exams WILL make you cry. I literally cried every night the week before exams and every day during exams my first semester. It was terrible. Plan ahead, people.

You will not stay in touch with everyone you want to. I'm not even joking I didn't speak to one person from my hometown after I moved away. Everyone went on to do their own things. And that's okay.

You will lose friends. I lost one of my best friends my first semester. I moved on. I'm fine and definitely better than ever after losing him.

You will miss home. Most of the time during the day I was so busy that I didn't think about home. But as soon as my head hit my pillow I was always wondering what I was missing.

You won't miss home. You won't always miss home. You'll forget to call or text. The home sickness will go away but also will creep up on you when you least expect it.

Freshman year is not easy, but it was definitely one of the best years of my life.

What do you wish you knew freshman year?

  1. Loosing friends that you had in high school is inevitable. It really hit me when I first went back for Thanksgiving break, everyone was so different. I forgot that when I leave, people go on with their lives.
Also, I lost my best friend my freshman year. Life goes on, and friendships end. But our friendship ending has been a very good thing!
