Why Feminism is Important

Feminism is beyond important this day in age. So many people think that sexism isn’t still a thing anymore. It definitely is. There is a hashtag on twitter #yesallwomen. Where women and girls would say why they think feminism is necessary. And low and behold, men just couldn’t take it, and started a “#yesallmen” hashtag. Men have it so much easier and we couldn’t even have a damn hashtag.

In the USA a woman with exactly the same level of education as her male counterpart can expect to earn 18% less than him. In another study, they found that women working the 10 lowest paying fields make about 9.6 cents less on average than men working in the same fields.

In a survey I found on What Men Think of Women, in the 12 months of the survey they found that people were three times more likely to experience violence by a man than violence by a woman.

Over 22 million women have been raped in their lifetime. 18.3% of women have survived a completed or attempted rape. Every 90 seconds, somewhere in America, someone is sexually assaulted. Girls ages 16-19 are 4 times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assult. 63.84% of women who reported being raped, physically abused, and/or stalked since the age of 18 were victimized by a current or former husband, cohabiting partner, boyfriend, or date. The FBI estimates that only 46% of rapes and sexual assaults are reported to the police. Source

On August 8th, a man named “War Machine” allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend “Mack” and one of her male friends in her house. Apparently he was upset because even though they had broken up, she was with another man. Mack claims War Machine forced her to strip and shower in front of him, bashed her face, pushed a knife up against her skin and threatened to rape her. She also said he pushed the knife into her in areas such as her hand, ear, and head. When he said he was going to rape her, he said he was disappointed in himself because he could not get hard. This left Mack with 18 broken bones around her face, a fractured rib, missing teeth, and a severely ruptured liver, among other injuries. Mack said “I believed I was going to die, he has beaten me many times before, but never this badly.” As of now, no one can find War Machine. There is a $20,000 reward for his capture. Source

This alone is disgusting enough. But, after this story broke, many people took to twitter to talk about it. After War Machine took to twitter to say that cops would never believe him, I personally saw a man say “Dude, she’s a slut, get over it and on with your life. She’s a hoe.” After people started telling him that what he’s saying isn’t right, he said “She’s a whore, she deserves to die” and “War Machine vs. Whore Machine”.

The facts as to why feminism is important are enough to speak for it’s self. Watch Miss Representation (it’s on Netflix) for more facts on women in politics, and how women are portrayed in the media. If you’re a woman, and you don’t believe in feminism, I have no idea how you are living with your life.

What makes you support feminism?

  1. This is a really good post! Feminism is so important, and I'm the same as you that I can't understand why any woman would not consider herself a feminist. The Miss Representation film is such a good video, and is still extremely powerful even if, like me, you're not american! Great post! x

  2. What a great post. I saw the Miss Representation film as well in college and it changed a lot of my viewpoints. But the main thing that opened my eyes was working in a Women's Center during grad school. I got to see what really happens with victims of domestic violence and rape, how they are treated...learn about rape culture, bystander intervention and so much more. Why is saying "Im a feminist" such a bad thing? I mean how many celebrities are like "Yeah I'm all for girl power but don't call my a feminist!" ugh. Sorry end rant lol. Thanks for writing this!

  4. This is such a powerful post. I strongly identify with feminism and find it baffling that many women don't (but once they find out the REAL definition, they often support it, ie Taylor Swift). The Christy Mack story is horrifying, and with the recent Ray Rice scandal, it's clear that sexism and sexual abuse is a huge problem in America. It needs to stop and I strongly believe that feminism has the power to do so.
